The Brief

Clear Living were commissioned to design and engineer the structural glass screen which was going to conceal an existing external staircase. Clear Living developed a solution of clamping all the Double glazed units to make them act as a cantilever, allowing them to span the full height of 4.5M. An Internal Handrail was also added to the brick wall.

The Solution

Creating a cantilever allowed the panels to span without the use of fins or structural steel supports. This allowed crucial floor space to be saved and also ended up saving the client money due to the smaller amount of materials. The biggest panels weighed over 600kg each.

The Result

A clean flush facade with uninterrupted views. The use of solar control glass ensured the space is well shielded from direct sunlight and the 1.1Wmk2 U-value helped to reduce the heat loss.
